BBC Somali’s Disgusting Propaganda: Targeting Somaliland to Smear Our Nation!

This isn’t just incompetence, it’s a blatant attack! The recent BBC Somali editorial on HIV rates in Somalia is a disgrace masquerading as journalism. They’ve gone beyond bias and straight into malicious propaganda!

1. Somaliland Used as a Pawn

The headline screams “Somalia’s Cities ans HIV Rates,” but slaps a picture of Hargeisa, our capital, right in the middle! Trying to trick us, BBCSomali Come on? Somaliland is a sovereign nation, and Hargeisa has nothing to do with Mogadishu’s statistics! This is a deliberate attempt to mislead and slander Somaliland!

2. BBC Somali : the Ministry of Misinformation?

The article name-drops various Somalia cities, but the only photo they use is Hargeisa, the capital city of the RoSL. Why? Because they don’t care about facts, they care about smearing Somaliland! And where are our voices in this entire sham? Silenced! The BBC quotes only Somalia health officials, pretending they have any authority over our internal data. This is utter contempt for journalistic ethics!

3. This is More Than Bias, It’s an Insult!

This isn’t some accidental mistake. The BBC Somali purposefully used a photo of Hargeisa to sensationalize a story that has nothing to do with us. It’s a calculated move to undermine our independence and sow discord. They think they can get away with it, but we won’t stand for it!

4. Somaliland Demands Accountability!

The BBC Somali needs to be held to the fire for this garbage. We demand a full retraction of the misleading photo, a complete correction of the article with an explanation for this egregious error, and a groveling apology. But that’s not enough.

5. Somaliland Will Not Be a BBC Somali Punching Bag!

We will not tolerate this blatant disrespect! I urge the Ministry of Information to take serious legal action against the BBC. A formal complaint and a demand for a public apology with complete transparency about their editorial process is the least we deserve.

6. The World Needs to Hear Somaliland’s Voice!

We’re done being misrepresented by the likes of the BBC Somali. We need to amplify our own media channels and get our story out there directly. The world needs to hear the truth about Somaliland, from us!

Share this post! Let everyone know how the BBC is twisting the truth! Together, we will hold them accountable and expose their deceitful propaganda!

There has been a big decline in the Somali language section of BBC radio

The BBC’s Somali language radio station used to be a radio station of great value to Somaliland and Somalia.

I remember that at 5:30 in the afternoon we used to listen to the BBC’s Somali language radio station.

People used to go to the tea shop and their homes because of the quality news and programs and the reporters who talked about it and had good knowledge of what they were conveying.

Today, if you go to Hargeisa and the big cities of Somaliland, you will not see two people listening to the BBC radio station in Somali.

The Somali language branch of the bbc radio station has gone down a lot when it was transferred to the city of Nairobi.

It has completely lost the trust of its listeners in Somaliland.

They are involved in Somali politics and most of them are located in Kenya.

I would personally suggest to the BBC’s Somali language branch that the station be moved to Hargeisa in the capital.
Somaliland, the first place where Somalis gained their independence in 1960, is a peaceful place, and it is home to the first radio station that speaks Somali in the entire Horn of Africa.

Shaqsigii afaraad ee afar kelyood leh dunida oo dhan oo laga helay Soomaaliya

Dadka leh kelyaha dheeraadka ah inta badan kuma baraarugsanaa ilaa ay la soo deristo xaalad caafimaad taas oo ku qasabta in ay dhakhtarka booqdaan, iyagoo aan ka warheyn heybadda dheeraadka ah ee uu ilaahay siiyay, waxayse ogaadaan marka lagu sameeyo baaritaan, oo ay ka warhelaan oo kaliya ka dib baarista ultrasound-ka ama qalliin ka dib.
Dadka leh kelyaha dheeraadka ah ee laga diiwaan geliyay adduunka oo dhan ayaa ah kaliya saddex ruux iyada oo qofkii afaraad haatan laga helay gudaha Soomaaliya.

Wiil da’yar oo dhakhaatiirtu ay ka gaabsadeen shaacinta magaciisa ayaa noqday bukaan baaritaan dheer ka dib la ogaaday in uu leeyahay afar kelyood.

Isbitaalka tababarrada iyo cilmi baarista Somali Turkish ee horay loogu yaqiinnay Digfeer, ayaa waxaa booqday bukaankan isaga oo ka cabanaya xanuun uu ka dareemayo killidiisa bidix, waxana dhakhaatiirtu ay amreen in baaritaan lagu sameeyo taas oo lagu ogaaday in uu bukaanku leeyahay afar killiyood iyo in dhinaca uu ka cabanayo uu dhagax kaga jiro.

Dr Cabdikariin Xuseen Maxamed Gabayre, dhakhtarka daaweynta iyo qalliimada xanuunnada kaadi mareenka & taranka ragga oo ah dhakhtarka qalliinka ku sameeyay bukaanka ayaa BBC-da u sheegay qaabka ay xaaladdan ugu baraarugeen.

“Bukaanka oo soo booqday isbitaalka ayaa baaritaan kadib lagu ogaaday xaaladdan, waxa ay noqotay mid la yaab leh maadama adduunka oo dhan lagu ogaa saddex qof oo kaliya isla markaana uu noqonayo qofkii afaraad, intaas kadibna waxa aan u howlgalnay qaabka ugu wanaagsan ee loo geli karo daryeelka iyo daweynta bukaankan maadaama uu yahay ruux ka duwan dadka kale”.
Bukaanka ayaa sidoo kale lagu sameeyay qalliinka xanuunkii uu ka cabanayay maadaama killidiisa bidix laga helay dhagax ku raagay.
Bukaanka waxa aan la tacaalnay xaaladdii uu isbitaalka u yimid waxa lagu sameeyay qalliin, maadama uu yahay bukaan leh xaalad ka duwan tan caadiga ah, qalliinkiisa iyo daweyntiisaba wey ka duwanaayeen kuwa caadiga ah, waliba waxa aan qoyskiisa kula dar daarannay in ay si gaar ah ula socdaan”, ayuu yiri Dr Gabayre oo qalliinka ku sameeyay.

Bukaanka oo la sheegay in uu dareemayay xanuun badan ayaa baaritaanka ka dib dhakhaatiirtu waxa ay go’aamiyeen in lagu sameeyo qalliin deg deg ah, waxaana lagu sameeyay qaab ‘leysar’ ah ama toos loo tooganayo dhagaxa iyadoo markii lagu guuleystay uu bukaanku dib ugu laabtay hoygiisii

Faa’iido mase faa’iido darro afarta kelyood
Bukaanka ayaa in muddo ah la xanuunsanayay dhagaxa killida kaga beermay iyada oo dhakhaatiirtu ay sheegeen in biyaha wasakhda ah ee la cabo iyo cunista hilibka guduudan, iyo waxyaabo kale oo badan ay sababaan dhagaxaanta kelyaha ku beerma.

Bukaankan leh afarta killiyood leh ayaa kelyihiisu waxa ay yihiin kuwo caafimaad qaba oo si caadi ah u wada shaqeynaya, waxaa muuqata in labada killiyood ee dhinaca midig ay kala madax bannaan yihiin, halka labada killiyood ee dhinaca bidix ay qayb isaga dheggan yihiin.

Killiyaha oo inta badan ay ku soo dhacaan waxyaabaha la cabo iyo wasakhda ka dhalataba waxa ay u nugul yihiin, in uu dhagax ku beermo taasoo dhakhaatiirta bukaankan ay ku micneeyeen in uu u nugul yahay dhagxaanta marka loo eego dadka caadiga ah ee leh labada killiyood.

“M ahan saameyn ama dhibaato gaar ah in bukaankan uu leeyahay afar killiyood laakiin waxa ay u nugul yihiin killiyihiisa xanunnada la xiriira dhagxaanta, maadaama afar killiyood uu leeyahay waxa uu xanuunka ka dareemi karaa fartaba maadaama dadka caadiga ah labada xanuunaan, taas oo noqon karta in xanuunkiisa uu ka bato sida caadiga ah”, ayuu yiri Dr Gabayre.

Tayo ahaan maka duwan yahay dadka leh labada kelyood
Bukaanka oo ku dhashay xaaladdan afarta kelyood ayaa la’is weydiinayaa tayada kelyihiisa iyo haddii uu ka faa’iido badan yahay dadka leh labada killiyood.

Dhakhaatiirtu waxa ay sheegayaan in tayada afartiisa kelli ay la mid tahay qof leh labo killiyood isla markaana aysan jirin faa, iido ka badan dadka caadiga ah, haddii ay noqoto waxqabad iyo shaqo.

Waxa kale oo xusid mudan in haddii laga saaro labo ka mid ah killiyihiisa ay la mid tahay in qof leh labo killiyood laga saaray middaas oo la micno ah nusqaan ku imaanyesa.

Dhakhaatiirta ayaa ehelka bukaanka kula taliyay la socosho iyo daryeel gaar ah, sidoo kale waxa ay sheegeen in mar kasta oo loo baahdo daweyn caafimaad uu u baahan yahay daryeel ka duwan midka caadiga ah maadaama uu ku ku jiro xaalad ka duwan tan dadka kale.

LONDON, United Kingdom, April 17, 2024/ — For 60 Years, the Eastern Africa Association (EAA) (www.EasternAfricaAssociation.org) has been at the forefront of promoting trade and investment between the UK and East Africa through networking events, information sharing, and direct support for members when they face challenges.

The EAA is marking its 60th anniversary this year – operating throughout a period covering most of the extraordinarily dynamic post-independence history of the region. It has had an enduring positive influence on the economic development of East Africa, encouraging international investment during periods of significant economic growth, as well as more troubled periods of political upheaval and sometimes conflict.

EAA Chairman Lord Valentine Cecil said: “We are very proud of what we have done to promote long term trade and investment in the countries of East Africa, which offer great opportunities across multiple sectors, thereby supporting sustainable development in the region,” noting that the 500 or so companies that form the EAA network employ an estimated 10,000 people in the region.

Established in Kenya and the UK in 1964, the EAA has grown into a pivotal business information service, benefiting a diverse array of regional and foreign investor corporations. It remains centered on enhancing economic ties, understanding political landscapes, and supporting members in navigating the vibrant East African markets. It maintains excellent diplomatic and Government ties, and brings together industry leaders, corporates, academic and public sector parties to support its mission aims.

The EAA will hold its 60th anniversary gala event on 29th May, starting with a Market Close Ceremony in its honor at the London Stock Exchange, followed by a VIP Reception and Gala Dinner, connecting key industry leaders with a shared interest in the East and Horn of Africa.

Mr. Abi Ajayi, Head of Africa and Middle East Primary Markets at the London Stock Exchange (LSEG) confirmed the market close ceremony in honor of the East Africa Association’s (EAA) diamond jubilee. In his announcement, Mr. Ajayi highlighted the work of the LSEG’s Africa Focus Group, which aims to strengthen the connection between the London Stock Exchange and Africa’s capital markets. This effort supports the increase of global investment into Africa and the development of effective financial market infrastructures. “We therefore congratulate the association on this milestone and look forward to hosting the EAA’s Market Close ceremony. It reflects our commitment to working in partnership to promote trade and investment flows in the Eastern Africa region and beyond,” said Ajayi.

Africa: Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to Participate at Invest in African Energy (IAE) 2024, Outlining Future of Africa’s Energy Industry

PARIS, France, April 18, 2024/ — OPEC Director of Research Dr. Ayed S. Al-Qahtani will deliver a keynote address at the upcoming Invest in African Energy (IAE) 2024 forum in Paris, affirming the importance of African oil supplies in global affairs.

Home to six OPEC member countries, the African continent is playing a growing role in global supply discussions, accounting for a rising percentage of OPEC-led production. Libya and Nigeria represent Africa’s two largest producers – according to OPEC’s latest monthly oil report – both producing approximately 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd). While Angola left the organization at the end of last year, OPEC is said to be in talks with Namibia – which could be Africa’s fourth-largest producer by 2030, on the back of prolific offshore discoveries – and other African nations that represent the next generation of African oil production.

IAE 2024 (https://apo-opa.co/49krKXM) is an exclusive forum designed to facilitate investment between African energy markets and global investors. Taking place May 14-15, 2024 in Paris, the event offers delegates two days of intensive engagement with industry experts, project developers, investors and policymakers. For more information, please visit www.Invest-Africa-Energy.com. To sponsor or participate as a delegate, please contact sales@energycapitalpower.com.

Consisting of 22 nations, OPEC and its allies have been committed to maintaining oil supply cuts to boost barrel prices amid economic uncertainty. The alliance has implemented cuts of more than five million bpd since the end of 2022 and is extending voluntary cuts of 2.2 million bpd into mid-2024. The IAE forum will feature technical discussions around Africa’s oil outlook, exploring supply, demand and price forecasts based on various energy transition scenarios.

“IAE 2024 welcomes the participation of OPEC in leading critical supply discussions, as African producers seek to incentivize new exploration and develop recent offshore discoveries. The forum will share high-level insights into current and future efforts to ensure market stability, as well as highlight Africa’s growing influence on the global energy stage and the importance of African solidarity,” says Sandra Jeque, Event & Project Director at forum organizers, Energy Capital & Power.

The Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism receives $7.3 million to boost agricultural productivity and smallholder farmers’ income

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, April 18, 2024/ — Global Affairs Canada (https://apo-opa.co/3UlInNr) has provided $7.3 million in funding to the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism (AFFM) to enhance sustainable agricultural productivity and smallholder farmer livelihoods, particularly women and youth across Africa.

The financing will aid the Mechanism in replicating its credit guarantee programs, enabling fertilizer importers and aggregators to access the product on credit. It will also boost efforts to improve soil health and provide technical assistance to farmers.

Signed on 25 March 2024, the funding agreement between the earmarks CAD$10 million specifically to the Mechanism’s ‘Fostering Africa’s agricultural productivity through fertilizer value chain financing’ (FOSTER) program. Administered by the African Development Bank Group, the Mechanism provides innovative financing to accelerate fertilizer use in Africa and improve agricultural productivity across the Bank’s regional member countries.

“We thank Global Affairs Canada for its support to advance the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism’s implementation of its Strategic Plan 2022-2028, which focuses on broadening access to finance through capital investments and policy reforms, among other priorities that benefit Africa’s smallholder farmers,” said Dr Beth Dunford, the Bank’s Vice President for Agriculture, Human and Social Development.

Fertilizer is essential for food production, yet it is significantly underutilized in sub-Saharan Africa’s agriculture sector due to limited financing and technical know-how among farmers.

The FOSTER program targets 800,000 smallholder farmers, with 40% of beneficiaries expected to be women and 10% youth. It aims to provide access to and improve the utilization of 80,000 tons of organic and inorganic fertilizer, which is expected to increase yields by 30%.

Canada’s Minister of International Development, Ahmed Hussen, said: “Canada is proud to support resilient, climate-smart agriculture and adaptable food production systems in Africa. We remain committed to promoting inclusive, green growth in partnership with the African Development Bank, including through our contribution to the Africa Fertilizer Financing Mechanism.”

Under the FOSTER program, the Mechanism will extend credit guarantee facilities to the inputs supply chain in eight African countries. The program will also facilitate the formulation of fertilizer policies and regulatory frameworks to foster gender-sensitive and sustainable soil management practices.

Marie Claire Kalihangabo, Coordinator of the Mechanism, welcomed Global Affairs Canada as a new member and expressed readiness to collaborate with Canada to fulfill the AFFM’s mandate effectively.”

The FOSTER program aligns with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals, the African Union’s Agenda 2063 (https://apo-opa.co/3Q2yLVd), and the Malabo Declaration (https://apo-opa.co/3Q3YJrF). The program also resonates with Canada’s Feminist International Assistance Policy and its efforts towards gender equality and women’s empowerment. It also complements Canada’s “Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health” initiative to boost food security and sustainability.

This initiative seeks to overhaul African agriculture into a productive, competitive, and sustainable sector through national Food and Agriculture Delivery Compacts that were developed at the Dakar 2 Food Summit in January 2023, co-organized by the African Development Bank.

Canada’s funding announcement comes just weeks ahead of the African Union Commission’s Africa Fertilizer and Soil Health Summit scheduled for 7-9 May 2024 in Nairobi.

Maxaa dib u soo cusbooneysiiyay dagaallada dib uga dhex qarxay Tigrayga iyo Amxaarada?

$

0

Dagaal ayaa ka dhacay mid ka mid ah deegaannada lagu muransan yahay ee u dhaxeeya gobollada Tigray iyo AmXaarada ee waqooyiga dalka Itoobiya.

Waa rabshaddii ugu horreysay oo dhacda tan iyo markii heshiis nabadeed, ay kala saxiixdeen labada dhinac dabayaaqadii sanadkii 2022, heshiiskaas soo afjaray mid ka mid ah iskahorimaadyadii ugu xumaa ee dhawaanahaan ka dhacay Afrika.

Dagaalka ayaa xoogiisa waxa uu ka socdaa degmada Raya Alaama oo ay labada gobol kala sheeganayaan. Deegaankan ayaa hoos taga koonfurta gobolka Tigray ka hor inta uusan dagaalku dhicin sanadka 2020 balse waxa uu soo galay gacanta ciidamada Amxaarada.

Sida ay sheegayaan dadka deegaanka, iska hor imaadyada ayaa billowday sabtidii, waxayna socdeen maalmo kadibna ciidamada Tigreega ayaa gudaha u galay magaalooyinka iyo tuulooyinka degmada.

Labada hoggaamiye ee Tigreega iyo Amxaarada ayaa isla markiiba isweydaarsaday eedeymo ku saabsan cidda hurisay rabshadaha. Hadda, ma jiraan calaamado muujinaya in dagaalku qaboobay

Maxaa keenay khilaafka?
Sheegashada dhuleed ee aagagga xuduudka u dhexeeya gobollada Tigrayga iyo Amxaarada ayaa jirtay muddo tobannaan sano ah.

Dhulka aan ka hadleyno waa aagga galbeedka Tigray, oo loo yaqaan Wolkayit kana tirsan gobolka Axmaarada, iyo Koonfurta Tigray gaarahaan deegaanka Raya oo xadka ku yaalla.

Balse deegaannadaan ayaa gacanta ugu jiray maamulladii Tigray tan iyo horraantii 1990-meeyadii, markii Itoobiya ay hirgelisay qaab-dhismeedka federaalka ku saleysan, iyadoo xilligaas la sameeyay labada gobo lee hadda dirirtu dhexmarayso.

Mas’uuliyiinta Amxaarada ayaa ku andacoonaya in deegaanadaas ay iyagu leeyihiin waxayna eeda dusha uga tuureen kooxda TPLF, oo ah koox siyaasadeed oo ka talinaysay gobolkaas ilaa dabayaaqadii 2010-kii.

Sannadkii 2020-kii, markii uu dagaal ku dhex maray dawladda federaalka iyo ciidamada Tigreega, ciidamada Amxaarada ayaa ka barbar dagaalamayey ciidanka federaalka. Ciidamada Amxaarada ayaa la wareegay deegaanadii lagu muransanaa waxayna ka sameysteen dhismayaal maamul.

Ka dib laba sano oo dagaallo lagu hoobtay ay dhaceen, heshiis nabadeed ayaa lagu gaaray dalka Koonfur Afrika bishii Noofambar 2022-kii.

Inkastoo heshiiskaasi la gaaray haddana arrinta ku saabsan cidda maamulaysa deegaannada lagu muransan yahay ayaa ahayd mid aan xal loo helin.

Jawaabta dowladda
Maamulka magaalada Addis Ababa ee xarunta federaalka ayaan weli ka hadlin iska horimaadyadan u dambeeyay.

Balse waxa ay dhawaan shaaciyeen in la qorsheynayo in ciidamadu ay sii maamulaan deegaanadaasi inta xal laga gaarayo. Horey waxay u sheegeen in ay soo celin doonaan dadka Tigrayga ah ee barakacay, aftina laga qaadi doono.

Todobaadkan, General Tadesse Werede, oo taliye u ahaa ciidamada Tigreega, haddana ah ku xigeenka madaxa maamulka ku meel gaarka ah ee Tigray, ayaa u sheegay wariyaasha gudaha in maamulkiisu uu gaaray heshiis lagu kala dirayo hay’adaha dawladda ee degaannada lagu muransan yahay.

Dowladda Federaalka ma aysan xaqiijin mana beenin hadalkiisa.

Arbacadii shalay, maamulka gobolka Amxaarada iyo laanta xisbiga talada haya ee gobolka, ee ra’iisul Wasaare Abiy Axmed, ayaa soo saaray bayaan si adag u qoran oo ay ku eedeeyeen ciidamada Tigrayga inay “si buuxda u jebiyeen” heshiiskii nabadeed ee hore loo gaaray isla markaana ay duullaan qaadeen.

Dhiniciisa, madaxa maamulka ku meel gaarka ah ee Tigray, Getachew Reda, ayaa ku tilmaamay in rabshadahaan ay ka dambeyaan dad “cadow ku ah nabadda”.

Maxaa xiga?
Isku dhacyada Itoobiya ayaa ah kuwo aan la saadaalin karin halka ay ku dambeyn doonaan.

Sannad iyo bar ka dib markii heshiis nabadeed la gaaray, xaalka dalka labaad ee ugu dadka badan Afrika, wuxuu weli u muuqdaa mid nabaddiisu aaney cago badan ku taagneyn.

In kasta oo ay xasillooni yari ka jirto gobolka Tigray ee dagaalladu naafeeyeen, haddana rabshadaha soo cusboonaaday ayaa loo arkaa kuwo meesha ka saari kara nabadda aan xooganeyn.

Gobolka Amxaarada ayaa maleeshiyaadka deegaanku waxa ay kula dagaalamayeen ciidanka dowladda tan iyo bishii Agoosto, waxaana guud ahaan gobolku uu kujiro xaalad deg deg ah oo intiisa badan internedka ayaa xitaa ka maqan.

Waxaa jirta cabsi laga qabo in dagaaladii ugu dambeeyay ee ay la galeen ciidamada Tigreega ay dhiiri galin karaan dhaq-dhaqaaqyada maleeshiyaadka.

Dagaallada horey uga dhacay gobollada Tigray iyo Amxaarada ayaa waxaa ku dhintay dad badan malaayiinna way ku barakaceen, iyadoo hay’adaha xquuqul insaankuna xaaladda ku tilmaameen mid halis ah oo su’aal gelinrta mustaqbalka dadka rayidka ah.

PRESS RELEASE
Africa’s Downstream Opportunities Take the Forefront as African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA) Executive Secretary Joins African Energy Week (AEW) 2024

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, April 19, 2024/ — The Executive Secretary of the African Refiners and Distributors Association (ARDA), Anibor Kragha, will speak at the African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energy conference – taking place from November 4–8 in Cape Town. Kragha’s return to the conference will not only improve the understanding of the state of play of Africa’s downstream industry but draw insight into strategies for addressing challenges to the sector’s development.

Africa is advancing its downstream infrastructure under efforts to scale-up energy security continent-wide. As the sole pan-African organization representing the African downstream sector, ARDA is at the forefront of this expansion, advocating for increased investment in infrastructure development and modernization and promoting greater participation by local companies. With African petroleum demand set to increase from current estimates of 4.1 million barrels per day (bpd) to over 5.3 million bpd by 2040, strengthening refining capacity and distribution is critical. During AEW: Invest in African Energy, Kragha will outline investment opportunities in this area.

AEW: Invest in African Energy is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. Visit www.AECWeek.com for more information about this exciting event.

Across the continent, efforts to bolster refining capacity to meet rising demand for petroleum are leading to new developments taking off across the downstream sector. In Nigeria, the Dangote Refinery – Africa’s largest refining facility – started producing diesel and aviation fuel in January 2024. The 650,000-bpd facility will cater to Nigeria’s domestic energy requirements while positioning the country as a key exporter upon full operational capacity – likely expected in mid-2025. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, an ARDA member, is also advancing the upgrading of the Port Harcourt refinery, with operations slated to commence in 2024 following the receipt of crude oil shipments from Shell in February.

Meanwhile, the first phase of Sentuo Oil Refinery Limited’s 120,000-bpd refinery in Ghana started operations in January 2024. The facility will process two million tons per annum of crude oil in the first phase and five million tons in the second phase, supporting the country’s industrialization efforts. While in Gabon, plans are underway to expand the processing capacity of the Port Gentil refinery to meet the rising demand for diesel and butane.

In Angola, national oil company (NOC) Sonangol – an ARDA member – awarded a project management contract for the 200,000 bpd Lobito Refinery to engineering firm KBR in April 2024. The contract advances the construction of the $6 billion facility. Once operational, the facility will be Angola’s largest refinery, increasing the country’s oil processing capacity by 200%. Angola is also developing several other refinery projects, including the 60,000 bpd Cabinda and 100,000 bpd Soyo facilities – all of which aim to bolster regional energy security by leveraging Angolan oil and gas resources. Progress is underway to modernize the existing Luanda Refinery which is responsible for 20% of the country’s demand.

In addition to refining, African countries are investing heavily in oil and gas storage capacity. Notably, Botswana Oil Limited, a member of ARDA and the country’s NOC, is seeking proposals for the Tshele Hills Oil Storage Development project, furthering Botswana’s fuel storage infrastructure for enhanced energy security. A tender was issued in November 2023, offering a strategic opportunity for downstream investors. The Kenya Pipeline Company is also committed to increasing storage capacity in the country, acquiring the now-defunct Kenya Petroleum Refineries Ltd’s assets in 2023. With the acquisition, the company has assumed management of 45 storage tanks with a capacity of 484 million liters, as well as the new Kipevu Oil Terminal 2 – which will double the country’s handling capacity from 35,000 tons.

“Meeting the growing demand for petroleum across Africa requires significant investments across the downstream sector. ARDA is spearheading both the rollout of new facilities as well as the modernization of existing downstream infrastructure to meet the continent’s needs. The association will continue to be instrumental in ensuring Africa meets its goal of making energy poverty history by 2030,” stated NJ Ayuk, the Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber.

Boasting a membership of 74 African oil refiners, importers, terminal operators, energy marketers, distributors and regulators, ARDA facilitates the exchange of technical and commercial best practices, advancing the growth of Africa’s downstream industry. At AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024, Kragha will engage in high-level panel discussions, spotlighting Africa’s downstream project pipeline and attractive investment opportunities.
