The Federal Police of Ethiopia captures 9,711 Kalashnikov bullets from smugglers who were trying to bring into the capital, Addis Ababa.
The bullets were captured from smugglers who were trying to bring into Wollo area of Amhara region and the capital, Addis Ababa. The smugglers were transporting the bullets in two vehicles departed from Harar area, eastern part of Ethiopia, according to report of Federal Police of Ethiopia aired on national broadcaster – ETV – this afternoon

The bullets were seized this week by the federal police and customs officers at Alberekete customs post. The bullets were seized inside a car – Code 2- B28163 AA – Toyota Corolla vehicle and a van – code 3 -47593 Oro – high roof minibus. The police have arrested the people who were smuggling the bullets and investigation is currently underway, according to the report.

In a related development, Ethiopian Customs Commission has announced that it has captured worth 2.4 million birr (around $84,000) contraband goods from smugglers this week at different customs posts. The items include sugar, shisha, mobile phone apparatus and metal products.

Over the past few years it has become common to hear reports of illegal circulations of weapons, medicines, narcotic drugs, cash of different countries currencies and other manufactured goods. During the first nine months of Ethiopian Calendar started July 8, 2018, Ethiopian Customs Commission has captured around $30 million worth goods, including weapons, currencies of different countries, narcotic drugs and various goods, from contraband traders.

The contraband goods smuggled into the country includes manufactured goods such as electronic and electrical goods, garments of various kinds, perfumes, cosmetics, pornography, habit forming drugs, armaments and others. Sudan, Eritrea, Kenya, and Djibouti are identified to be the main sources of these goods.

Coffee, which is the country’s chief export item, a multitude of livestock, cereals of various types, animal skins, fuel and others are some of the goods smuggled out of the country.

President Muse Bihi Receives UK Ambassador

The Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi received today at the presidency in Hargeisa, the United Kingdom ambassador accredited to the neighboring country of Somalia, Mr. Ben Fender, OBE.

Ambassador Fender was part of the recent EU delegation to Somaliland, but is now making his first maiden visit to Somaliland.

The president and the ambassador discussed areas of mutual interest including UK development to Somaliland, the security situation in the region and the prospective parliamentary and local elections scheduled for December, 2019.

The meeting was also attended by head of the UK office in Hargeisa, Stuart Brown and the Somaliland deputy-Foreign minister, Abdilkadir Omar Jama.

Somaliland: House of Representative Refuse To Remove Immunity From Dhakool & Criticizes Arrest

The Somaliland House of Representative has refused to lift the parliamentary immunity from Representative Dhakool. The representative was arrested a few days ago by the administration of President Muse Bihi for uttering, allegedly, ‘seditious” remarks pertaining to the 18th May anniversary.

The Marodi Jeh Regional court refused to hear the case against the representative and it’s Chief Justice, Qaw’dhan, ruled the arrest as illegal and unconstitutional, since the representative enjoyed parliamentary immunity.

The Speaker of the House of Representative, Bashe Mohamed Farah, has called on the government to release the representative since the house has decided not to lift his parliamentary immunity.

Representative Dhakool from Sool region is previously on record as stating that the 18th May anniversary is a national celebration, but recently declared that the date “belonged to Isaaq community, the Somali National Movement and not all communities were represented in Burao in 1991”.

The representative is currently in remand at the CID Division in Hargeisa, where he has been incarcerated since his arrest.

Dubai: Saudi Energy Minister Khalid Al Falih said on Tuesday that two oil pumping stations for the East-West pipeline had been hit by explosive-laden drones, calling the attack “an act of terrorism” that targeted global oil supplies

Falih said that Saudi oil output and exports for crude and refined products were continuing without disruption, but that the state oil giant Aramco had halted oil pumping in the pipeline while the damage was evaluated and the stations were repaired, according to a statement carried by the state news agency SPA.

Saudi Energy Minister Khalid Al Falih in a statment said “Two pumping stations on a major Saudi oil pipeline were attacked by drones on Tuesday, halting the flow of crude along it,”

The two pumping stations bombed belong to Saudi Aramco, forcing the state oil company to suspend operations in the area to assess what the kingdom said was ‘limited’ damage.

The stations are linked to a pipeline transporting oil from fields in the eastern sector to the port of Yanbu on the western coast, state-run Saudi Press Agency reported, citing the Energy Ministry.

Earlier, a television station run by Yemen’s Houthi group said on Tuesday the Iran-aligned movement had launched drone attacks on Saudi installations, without identifying the targets or time of the attacks.

Somaliland: Heavy Rains Cause Loss Of Life & Properties Across The Country.

Hargeisa,(Qaran news)-Heavy rains, accompanied by gale force winds have caused havoc in many parts of Somaliland.

In Hargeisa, at least six people were said to have lost their lives and several more still missing and many ramshackle abodes were swept away in heavy rains that brought the city to a standstill. The major thoroughfares of the city were flooded and the already decrepit roads became even more impassable.

In Caynabo, heavy rains with strong winds also caused flooding and damages to properties in the town. The town of Burao also saw some flooding as a result of the heavy rains.

As welcome as these rains are, with many parts of the country facing drought, the inability of the local authorities to prepare and deal with resulting floods and damages remains acute. Given the meager resources of the country, a certain amount of ingenuity and self-help is required.

The Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi inspected the damages caused by the rains in Hargeisa, accompanied by central and local government officials.
